I wish that before I had my baby, someone had made a list of all of the things that you really need and that were the best buys for baby. That way, there would have been a lot less trial and error! Read on to learn my favorite items that you need for baby.
My favorite nursery items that have helped the most with my baby:
For Nap and Bedtime-
Fisher-Price Deluxe Newborn Auto Rock ‘N Play Sleeper With Smartconnect– I will admit I let my son sleep in this. I know they say you aren’t supposed to but I was trying everything to get him to sleep better. It did work and I love that it is so portable. I took this on a road trip in a small car and with one touch of a button it folds to be stored in the trunk. I have also taken it apart and was able to fit it in a long duffle for a flight.
Some awesome features about this rock and play are that it has vibrations and you can control it from your smart phone. I actually had the auto rock and play that did not have the vibrations feature and smart connect to start out with and I love this one so much better. The vibrations soothed my son back to sleep when he would fuss.
This is not magic- my son was a difficult sleeper and this would not put him to sleep on his own although it may for other babies. It did however soothe him. When he woke up it may soothe him back to sleep or when I set him down in it, it would soothe him so he would not wake up as much as he now does without the rock and play.
Snuggle Me Co-Sleeping Lounger– we LOVE this co-sleeper! When I transitioned my baby out of the rock and play I was nervous that he would not sleep well. I was right. He would only nap for about 15-20 minutes in just his crib. So I caved and put him back in his rock and play for a week while we waited for the co-sleeper to come in.
We put this co-sleeper in his crib and I have also slept with him in it next to me on the bed. He sleeps just as well in this as he did in the rock and play. The way it hugs him makes him feel more secure.
This has been amazing with traveling as well. I know some babies do not sleep well in a pack and play as compared to their cribs. The co-sleeper fit well in our large suitcase and we were able to take it along with us when traveling to put in his pack and play. He slept great in it and I think it is partially because the co-sleeper makes it feel more like his crib.
I am so glad we have this as we are about to move overseas and he will be without his crib for at least 6 weeks. With so much transition, I am hoping this will at least bring a little bit of normalcy to his nap times.
Edit*** Since writing this post, we have moved overseas to Korea. This co-sleeper has been a lifesaver for the transition of hotels, sleeping in the pack-and-play, and transitioning to his crib once it arrived. With the time change and the difficulty that brought with it, not having to worry about my baby not sleeping well in his pack-and-play as compared to his crib was amazing!
For the Nursery-
Dekor Plus Hands-Free Diaper Pail-I love this diaper pail because it contains the smell, has a locking feature if you have toddlers so they can’t stick their hands in, and has a foot pedal to open the top so you don’t have to touch the pail.
The trash bag refills can be cut at any point to allow you to throw away at trash time or after a particularly dirty diaper. The trash bag refills are essentially one very long trash bag that goes along the rim of the pail and you tie at the bottom. This allows for you to get a ton of use out of them. Each refill box only comes with two which initially alarmed me but the box of two lasts us longer than a month and we go through a considerable amount of diapers as my son begins to cry even if he is just a tad wet with a thick absorbent diaper.
Edit*** While we have been in Korea waiting for our household shipment to arrive, we have not had our diaper pail. The difference in having the diaper pail to immediately throw the diapers into and just putting them into a plastic bag is astounding. Even if I take the diapers to the trash every couple of hours, my baby’s room smells a tad like urine. I miss my Dekor diaper pail so much and cannot wait until we get it back!
Vornadobaby Sunny CS Nursery Heater, Automatic Climate Control– Our nursery was the room over the garage so it got very cold in the winter and very hot in the summer. The baby vornedo made it easy to keep his room at a uniform temperature.
The heater has a fan feature as well to cool down the room. The heater itself is designed with babies in mind. It cannot tip over to start a fire as there is a switch at the bottom that if not pushed in, will immediately shut off the heater.
It is cool to the touch and designed with rounded edges and small slats so that even the smallest fingers cannot fit in and get stuck in any parts of the heater. It is lightweight and short and rounded to minimize the likelihood of falling on baby.
Hoop Glider and Ottoman – I spent so much time in my rocking chair especially in the beginning. A nice quality chair will help to keep you comfortable while you rock your little one to sleep.
Boppy Nursing Pillow – I absolutely love this nursing pillow. We had a different pillow before our friend gave us this as a gift and I love this one so much more. It is at just the right height for easy nursing. Not breastfeeding? This pillow is also awesome for laying the baby on your lap when rocking or also to prop them up as a seat when they get a bit older for feeding or play.
The Baby Shusher– I know, it sounds silly but this thing is a lifesaver. For four months, several hours a day I was going “shhh” constantly trying to get my baby to sleep. It definitely helped him but after all that, my poor teeth hurt!
Doing that constantly caused my teeth to be so sensitive that it was a bit painful. My husband bought the shusher and it has definitely helped. I also love it for the car. My baby used to fall asleep so easily in the car and then around 3 months stopped being able to fall asleep in the car himself. The shusher helps to calm him so I can concentrate on the road.
Baby Clothing and Swaddles-
HALO SleepSack Swaddle– We tried many swaddles and this was our absolute favorite. It zips up from the top to bottom, allowing you to change a diaper in the middle of the night without un-swaddling and fully waking up your baby. For our difficult sleeper this was a must. Swaddling extended his night-time sleep from only 2 hours at a time to anywhere from 4-7 hours. Since he only takes light naps during the day, that long sleep at night is what saves me.
Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit and the Zipadee-Zip – When baby is no longer able to be swaddled, these swaddle transitions were a life saver. They muffle his startle reflex so that he does not wake himself at night. Read my full post comparing the two here: Swaddle Transition: The Zipadee Zip v.s. Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleepsuit
Carters Zip-Up Sleep & Play : My baby basically lived in these. We do not leave the house much and keep the house relatively cool (about 70 degrees) and when he was without socks, his feet would get chilled. I could not keep socks on the kid to save my life so footy pajamas are awesome. The zip up kind? Even better. I changed 20 diapers a day and anything that I had to button or snap was not nearly as convenient. Over the head outfits are cute but not nearly as quick and easy as a footie onesie.
Since this list is already so long, I will leave it at that! I hope this helps you to make decisions on what nursery items to buy for your new baby. Have anything else to add that helped you the most in your nursery? Leave me a message in the comments section, I would love to hear it!
Stay tuned, my next post will be about my favorite items to entertain baby.
