As a military Spouse, it is hard enough to find a position when you are only in one location for so long. If you are like me, you also get super anxious and trip up on your words. By preparing for the interview, you walk in with confidence, reducing your anxiety and impressing your employers.
In every job interview, you are trying to sell yourself. Confidence and prepared responses will wow every potential employer every time. Below are the 2 most important things to do to prepare for your next interview.
1.) Be prepared
I always get anxious before a job interview and being prepared for anything will help you to not trip up from a question and instead wow them with your flawless responses.
Us this list of Possible Interview Questions and write out your answers. Be prepared to talk about yourself, why you want the position, and what skills you possess that will make you an asset to their team.
I once snagged a job by wowing my interviewers with the strengths and weaknesses question. I told them my greatest strength was being a perfectionist which made me very detail oriented and always striving to do my best. When they asked me my greatest weakness, I said again that I was a perfectionist and that your greatest strength can also be your greatest weakness if not kept in a constant balance. I could tell he was impressed by my answer and was offered a position almost immediately.
Make sure to bring up key examples in your past experience that makes you the best fit for their company. Even if you do not have experience in that particular field, you can translate skills you have learned in other jobs (or even volunteer or educational experiences) and talk about how those skills can be an asset for the field you are applying in. For example, I discussed how a degree in Psychology could be an asset in the business world by being able to effectively communicate with others and work as a team.
Do research on the company in which you are applying to come up with a couple of questions to ask your interviewers. You never want to say no when they ask if you have any questions for them.
After you have your responses written out, do a mock interview with a friend, family member, or significant other so you can hear your answers and bounce ideas off another person. That way you can make changes before the big day.
By not only writing down your responses but also saying them aloud, you will be able to remember them quicker, easing your nerves and making your presentation flawless.
2.) Dress the part
Always show up to an interview dressed professionally. It does not matter if you are applying at a bar (trust me I’ve been there) dressing in a professional outfit will surprise and impress your potential employers.
If you are applying for a position at a company- this is expected. Make sure you are dressed in nice slacks and a button down for men (tie and jacket depending on the company) or a modest skirt and blouse or slacks and blouse ensemble for women.
If you have visible tattoos, try to hide them as much as possible for the interview. I know the world is changing but first impressions are very important. I have several tattoos one being a very large piece on my foot and ankle which I make sure to cover with opaque stockings.
For ladies, make sure your blouse is not too tight and revealing. A tight blouse is fine under a buttoned blazer (I have done this often) as long as it is not too low cut.
Now just to show up on time, relax, and rock your interview! I know, easier said than done but take a deep breath and mentally picture yourself flawlessly answering your interview questions. You got this!
